Angulo, D.V.M., Ph.D.: Outbreak of Salmonellosis Linked to Live Poultry from a Mail-Order Hatchery Nontyphoidal salmonella infections are connected with considerable mortality and morbidity in the usa, with an estimated 1 million illnesses, 19,000 hospitalizations, and 370 deaths occurring annually.1 Although the majority of these infections are foodborne, salmonellosis may also be acquired through contact with animals, including live poultry .2-8 Poultry can become infected with salmonella through comingling with infected birds from different sources, vertical transmission from infected hens, or contaminated feed.9 Live poultry infected with salmonella typically show up intermittently healthy but can shed bacteria, making the sampling of individual birds an unreliable way to determine whether birds are holding or shedding bacteria .
Over 2,300 registered nurses responded, representing 780 facilities throughout 46 states and the District of Columbia. In the survey, 85 % of nurses reported that their hospital has not provided any scholarly education on Ebola, leaving them baffled on what questions to ask individuals and how exactly to properly communicate worries and suspicions with fellow hospital staff. An impressive 40 % stated their hospital lacks necessary eye-protection gear like encounter shields, side or goggles shields. Another 38 % said their service had an insufficient quantity of fluid-resistant/impermeable gowns in their hospital. Forty-one % stated their medical center doesn’t even have the methods to isolate individuals if Ebola will sweep through, because there aren’t enough plastic-covered mattresses and pillows for a crisis.
