Trinity's
History
Trinity Lutheran Church was
established in 1902. It was the first Des Moines
congregation of the Lutheran Church - Missouri
Synod. Its nearest sister congregation was
Christ Lutheran Church located in Bouton over 35
miles to the north west with whom it shared a
pastor.
Trinitys first permanent
building site was located at the intersection of
7th & University. The building is still
standing and being used as a church facility. In
the 1950s, Trinity erected a new facility
on its present site at 32nd & University
which at the time was considered the western part
of Des Moines. Located in a growing part of the
city and in the heart of the Drake Campus
community Trinity quickly outgrew its building
and in 1963 added a new sanctuary to its facility.
The old sanctuary was converted into a
multipurpose gymnasium.
Trinity has always been a
diverse congregation drawing people from all
parts of the city and the distant suburbs. In
addition to serving various geographys, it
also serves a variety of people. God has blessed
Trinity with its location in relationship to
Drake University. It is literally surrounded by
the college and college related endeavors.
Hundreds of students have called Trinity their
church home over the last 5 decades. Many remain
here in Des Moines after graduation and continue
to be part of Gods family at Trinity.
Trinity campus ministry alums can be found
scattered throughout the world.
Trinity began a ministry to
South East Asians and other refugees in the 1980s.
It has been extremely active in helping people
fleeing disaster, persecution or tyranny in
making a new start in Des Moines. In 1990 the
congregation hired its first full time SE Asian
worker. God opened another ethnic ministry up to
Trinity in 1993 when the congregation responded
to the need of people from Sudan. A Sudanese
worker was hired to serve the congregation in
1994. Each Sunday, worship services are
celebrated in English, Laotian, and in Nuer the
language of a Southern Sudanese tribe.
Many other ministries exist at
Trinity serving our youth, our elderly, our
families, and our community.
Trinity is the mother
congregation of all Lutheran (LCMS) churches in
Des Moines and continues to serve as a focal
point for area Lutherans.
